Date of Interview: October 12, 2008
Host: Doug Wright
Welcome to the program. It’s great to have you along on “Everyday Lives, Everyday Values.” I have a beautiful new book from Deseret Book called The Mother In Me: Real World Reflections on Growing Into Motherhood, and we’re delighted to have the editor of this book, Kathryn Lynard Soper, with us. And there is a foreward by Beverly Campbell, who has been a guest often on this show as well. Kathryn, what a pleasure to have you join us on Everyday Lives, Everyday Values. Thanks for being here.
KS: Thank you. It’s an honor to be here.
DW: I was just talking with you about the legacy of the book; how long you’ve been working on it; how long it’s been in the process; this has been at least a two year project for you.
KS: That’s right. We began a little over two years ago. It took a year to have the contributing authors put together their essays and their poetry, and we went through the revision process, polishing up the writing and then compiling the manuscript. And it took another year once Deseret Book acquired the manuscript for it to finally be published. So we’re thrilled to actually have it here.
DW: It must be fun and quite rewarding after you put so much of yourself – and so many other people have put so much of themselves into this – to actually see it, ready to go. And so nicely done.
KS: Yes, it’s a little bit like having a baby, as a matter of fact.

ABC-4 and KSL were there. Check out our KSL clip! We sold over 100 copies of the book to benefit Stephanie and Christian Nielson. Thanks Deseret Book (who really didn’t know what they were getting into when they invited the crazy Segullah ladies to have a party) and thanks to everyone who came!

Get out your party boots and your Kleenex: You’re invited to
The Mother in Me Book Release Party and Fundraiser!
On Saturday, October 18, the editor and a dozen contributing authors to The Mother in Me will be frolicking from 2-4 p.m. at the Deseret Bookstore in the University Mall (Orem, UT). Come and enjoy great food, great stories, great poetry, great door prizes, great company, and great food (oh, and great food).
All royalties from sales of The Mother in Me that day will be donated to the Stephanie and Christian Nielson Recovery Fund.

Stephanie, the sister of one of our contributing authors and a mother of four young children, was critically burned (over 80% of her body, including her face) in a private plane crash in August. Her husband Christian was badly injured as well. Stephanie has been in an induced coma for 6 weeks now, and will remain so for several months. Her post-hospital rehabilitation will not be covered by insurance.
You can help this family by participating in our Celebrating Motherhood fundraiser. If conflicts prevent you from attending the party, you can participate online by purchasing copies of The Mother in Me at any Deseret Bookstore nationwide, or on Deseret Book’s website anytime on Saturday, October 18. (Note: this fundraiser does not include purchases made through Amazon.com.)
Please spread the word to your friends and family! We want BIG sales so that we can make a generous contribution to the Nielsons.
Stephanie has gained tens of thousands of admirers for her daily celebration of motherhood–not only the fun parts, but also the hard parts. Stephanie knows that there’s beauty to be found in all aspects of mothering, and that the tough stuff can work much good in our lives and hearts–if we let it. This realistic yet uplifting perspective is at the very center of the Mother in Me, a collection of prose and poetry written by 28 mothers of young children. As a group of authors and friends, we decided there was no better way to help Stephanie than by celebrating motherhood together. Please join with us!
These contributing authors and poets will be at the party. We’re excited to meet you!
